Ticknall church of St George in Derbyshire

Ticknall church

Ticknall church
The church of St George was built on the site of the former Church of Thomas a Beckett in 1831 by Stevens as good honest simple Gothic Revival. It has a west tower with the recessed spire, usual in the Perp style of this part of the country. The aisle arcades have octagonal piers. The old church had become too small for the growing population of 1281 residents compared with approximately 750 now. When they tried to demolish the old church, parts proved resistent to gunpowder and picturesque remains are still standing, namely the west wall and the altar window.
