Mackworth in Derby
The suburb of Mackworth lies off the busy A52 Derby to Ashbourne road and has little connection with the village which bears the same name on the opposite side of the A52. The suburb is a rather featureless housing estate with several pockets of shops and amenities. The estate has close proximity to Markeaton Park and nearby countryside.
Mackworth village is situated in a quiet lane and consists of a few cottages, farms, and a church.
The entrance to one of the farms is a 15th century turreted gatehouse, the remains of Mackworth Castle, which was home to the Mackworth family who served under the Black Prince at the battle of Poitiers. Mackworth castle was destroyed during the civil war. Other notable families in the area were the Touchets and the Mundys, who lived over at the now demolished Markeaton Hall.
The Parish Church of All Saints stands back from the road, isolated in a field to the east of the village centre. It is mostly 14th century, though it was probably built on a former place of worship. It has a recessed spire with one tier of dormer windows, and an ashlar faced Perp west tower, with angle buttresses at the top below the battlements. Interestingly, it has no outside door which probably suggests it was built for defence.
It contains monuments to the Touchet and Mundy families, including a monument to Edward Mundy who died in 1607, which is an alabaster effigy on a tomb chest with the figures of children on its front wall, and a fine alabaster slab commemorating Thomas Touchet, who was rector from 1381 to 1409. It also contains an elaborate lecturn, dated 1903, with a pattern of vine leaves and grapes.
