Hartington Hall in Derbyshire
Hartington Hall, standing on the fringe of Hartington village in Derbyshire, was built in 1611 for Thomas Bateman. It is stone built, gabled and H shaped in plan. The west front was rebuilt in 1861-66 by Henry Issac Stevens of Derby. Owned by the Bateman family for centuries it was sold to the Youth Hostel Association in 1948 and has remained a Youth Hostel ever since.
Hartington Hall was the first Youth Hostel in the country to have central heating and electricity.
