Stocks at Mapperley and Octagonal toll house at Stoney Middleton

Village Stocks in Mapperley

You can still find stocks in a number of Derbyshire villages. This one is situated at Mapperley near Ilkeston. People were put in the stocks for minor offences like drinking or gambling on a Sunday or even refusing to help with the harvest. Inmates were the target for abuse and any filth anyone cared to throw. Sometimes a whipping post would be attached to the stocks and offenders would be whipped bare-backed.

Octagonal Toll House in Stoney Middleton

Toll Houses were erected when local authorities were made responsible for the upkeep of the roads that passed through their parish. They come in all shapes and sizes and this octagonal one was built in 1840 at a cost of 114. It has a pretty situation, standing over a brook that runs down Middleton Dale. It is now the village chippie.
