Monsal viaduct and Pike Pool in Beresford Dale

Pike pool in Beresford Dale

Half way along Beresford Dale is Pike Pool, so called, as Charles Cotton, who spent much time fishing in the river here, himself tells us because of its grey monolith or pike that rises out of the water.

Monsal Dale viaduct

Monsal Head looks out over the graceful fine arched Monsal dale viaduct, built in 1863 as part of the Midland Line. The building of the Midland Line was the cause of John Ruskins famous outburst about the valley being gone and every fool in Buxton can be in Bakewell in half an hour and every fool in Bakewell at Buxton. The viaduct actually compliments the scenery with superb views of the river Wye deep down in the valley, flowing at the foot of fine hills as it comes from Miller's Dale and Upper Dale and makes a glorious curve round the foot of Patwell Hill as it begins its journey through the lovely Monsal Dale.
