The bridge had been widened in the 19th century. Bakewell attracts many tourists both local and from abroad to the town centre which is busy all year round with plenty of attractions including gardens, churches, museums, pubs, coffee shops, and numerous shops selling books, clothes and gifts. Local to Bakewell are many tranquil villages like Ashford in the Water as well as supurb walks including the ever popular Monsal dale.
