Allestree in Derby - Information and services

Allestree

Allestree is a large, pleasant residential suburb, 2 miles north of Derby city centre, still surrounded by parkland in the form of Allestree Park to the north asnd Markeaton Park to the south. Much of its growth has taken place just in the last 40 years.

The old village of Allestree was mentioned in Domesday and given to Henry de Ferres as a reward for his work on the book.

Allestree's earliest inhabitants were farmers and evidence of strip farming can still be seen in areas around the present village. There are still some fine old houses to be found around the Cornhill area, with number 19 Cornhill, called Yew Tree Cottage, the only timber framed and thatched roof building left in the area, being the most notable.

In the same area is the Church of St Edmund, largely rebuilt in the 19th century by Stevens and Robinson of Derby but retaining it's low 13th century tower and a Norman doorway. There are several memorials from the 17th and 18th centuries to the Mundy's of Markeaton and the Evans and Johnsons of Allestree Hall. Allestree Hall is situated in the now public park which contains a lake and a golf course. The hall was designed by James Wyatt , the celebrated architect, and work began on the hall in 1795. For more information on Allestree Park please Allestree Park.

There are several 'shopping centres' in Allestree, the largest being the Park Farm Centre, opened in the 1970's. The Red Cow in the original village is a popular pub as is the Broadway.

Since 1833 there has been a school in Allestree, originally with the support of the Evans family, wealthy local benefactors. Today there are two Primary Schools in Allestree, Portway Junior School on Robincroft Road, and Lawn Primary School on Norbury Close behind Park Farm. Woodlands Community School is the local comprehensive school with a sixth form, catering for around 1150 pupils aged 11–18. The catchment area of The Ecclesbourne School also includes Allestree. Derby County Manager Nigel Clough attended this school when Brian Clough was the Manager of Derby County in the 'Glory Days'.

The University of Derby has its main campus within the Allestree ward.
